Wallpaper instructions – how to apply Story of July wallpaper

Story of July wallpaper is delivered in strips and is designed for easy, clean application. For the best result, thorough preparation and careful application are essential. Follow the step-by-step instructions below.

Preparation of the substrate

A smooth and clean surface is essential for a flawless result. Ensure the wall is clean, dry, and dust-free. Any loose paint, cracks, or imperfections should be repaired beforehand. The surface should be a uniform color, preferably white or a light shade.

Highly absorbent walls, such as new plasterwork, should be pre-treated with a suitable primer or undercoat. This prevents the adhesive from soaking in too quickly and ensures better wallpaper adhesion.

Supplies

To apply the wallpaper, you will need wallpaper paste suitable for non-woven wallpaper, a bucket and a stirrer, a block brush or paint roller, a spirit level or plumb line, a soft wallpaper spatula or brush, a sharp utility knife, and a clean cloth.

Apply glue

Story of July wallpaper is non-woven. This means the adhesive is applied to the wall, not the wallpaper itself. Apply the adhesive evenly across the width of the wall. Work in sections and ensure the adhesive is evenly distributed, with no dry patches.

Applying wallpaper

Always start with the first strip. Use a spirit level or plumb line to ensure it's perfectly straight. Apply the strip from top to bottom, allowing for a slight overlap at the top and bottom. Carefully smooth the wallpaper from the center outward to prevent air bubbles. Use a soft spatula or brush and work gently.

Connect the next strips seam to seam. Don't overlap the strips and don't force the wallpaper by pulling on it.

Cutting and finishing

Carefully trim away any excess wallpaper along the ceiling, skirting boards, or window frames with a sharp knife. Use a clean cutting edge for the neatest result. You can remove any adhesive residue immediately with a slightly damp cloth.

Drying time

Let the wallpaper dry undisturbed. Avoid drafts and significant temperature fluctuations, and keep windows and doors closed as much as possible. Let the wallpaper dry undisturbed for at least 24 hours.
